Excellent point, Jen. With web design and teaching, content is king. (Honestly, I hope to never see a rotating font on the web again.)

I agree completely that we often struggle to find the meat in the mashed potatoes. I think on many occasions I've been guilty myself of demonstrating a new site or tool simply because it makes me smile.

A good example of this is Xtranormal.com. I am doing a demo this week, but I am torn whether this ultimately has any value in student learning. Maybe I'm just introducing the ultimate invitation maker! Now, I do have some justification. The creation tools do give some approximation of the steps in making a movie without needing video cameras. I also think that these videos are great eye-catchers (at least once). Still I am unsure, and I'll need to make sure that my teachers don't all start using it just to use it.

However, just as a rusty horn sounds beautiful in the hands of a master, it is possible that even "fluff" applications might be changed into great learning tools in the hands of a creative teacher.

I suppose this is the burden of the early adopter!
